Medical Missions
In the early l980's after the inauguration of our counterpart foundation's hospital, the Dr. Jose P. Rizal Memorial Hospital and Medical Research Center (JPRizal-Philippines) in Bagong Bayan, Dasmarinas, Cavite, RMMF Trustees would do medical missions at the hospital. As word spread of an opportunity to give back to the country - the missions took a more formal turn, and by the l990's, a larger number of doctors joined, making the medical missions a formal part of the RMMF's mission and vision. In 2000, RMMF partnered with the Shoe Mart Foundation, who supplied the transportation needs of the medical missions in Luzon. The Dr. JP Rizal Hospital has been sold in 2007, to the Sisters of St. Paul, however RMMF support continues.
To date, The medical missions have visited the provinces of Aklan, Bohol, Cavite, Cotabato, Guimaras, Iloilo, Isabela, Pampanga, Romblon, La Union, Leyte, Pangasinan and Zambales in most cases having visited multiple times.
In 2006, Dr. Alex Vinluan received the distinguished and prestigious "Bayaning Filipino" (Filipino hero) Award, presented in San Jose, California by the ABS-CBN, (the
Filipino channel) and in 2007, the RMMF was honored with the same award as an organization.
When not involved in container shipments, RMMF sends boxes of supplies to various locations in the Philippines, responding in kind to natural calamities and disasters, such as typhoons, earthquakes and floods. RMMF sponsors local doctors and dentists to serve the truly indigent. RMMF supports
civic organizations and partners with them in organizing missions throughout the country. RMMF has established alliances and cooperative agreements with urban clinics and hospitals who will in turn serve patients needing emergency assistance.
The medical mission provides participants a unique first hand experience in serving in a
third world country. An opportunity to teach new medical and surgical techniques to local doctors and practitioners. It gives them the face of poverty and a face to remember when they donate funds and give of themselves. Many mission volunteers are "repeat" missionaries.
